Arsenal exodus continues as Gilberto joins Panathinaikos

July 18, 2008

Arsenal midfielder Gilberto has ended his 6-year stay at Arsenal by signing for Greek side Panathinaikos. The fee for the Brazilian is reported as being around the £1 million mark.

Gilberto becomes one of the highest paid players in Greece:

I’m hungry to win more titles.

I came to Greece because I have big ambitions, it’s very important for me to be able to continue to give my best. I couldn’t say no to the offer.

Gilberto made 244 appearances for Arsenal, and scored 24 goals from midfield.

In his time at Arsenal he one the Premier League in 2003/2004 and he also lifted the FA Cup in 2003 and again in 2005.

However he struggled to get into the first team last season as Fabregas and Flamini formed a successful partnership in midfield.

His departure follows Flamini to Milan and Hleb to Barcelona. Arsenal will have the money to strengthen now, but time is running out as the new season kicks off next month.
