Manchester City approach Scolari

May 7, 2008

Sven isn’t even gone yet and City Chairman Thaksin Shinawatra is lining up his replacement, the current Portugal national team coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

The big Brazilian has stated that nothing will happen until after Euro 2008. It is though that Scolari will move on after the tournament but with other jobs in Europe City will have to fork out around £3.2m-a-year for his services.

Meanwhile Manchester City fans have reacted angrily at last weeks news that the writing is on the wall for Sven at City. Fans and former players have vented angry and have even sighted that protest could be made by stay away at games next year.

Sven to be Sacked

April 29, 2008

It looks like the writing is on the wall for Sven-Goran Eriksson, the Manchester City manager is going to be sacked at the end of the season, according to BBC Sport.

City owner Thaksin Shinawatra who has been unimpressed by the second half of City’s season told Eriksson he was “not the right man for the job” at a meeting on Saturday.

Eriksson took training on Monday and on informing the players many players didn’t like the news, Eriksson has done well at City considering the team hasn’t won in 2007 at home on his arrival.

But this year since the turn of the year City have been poor, being knocked out of the F.A. Cup to Sheffield United and losing on Saturday to lowly Fulham.

It seems like an insane move for the chairman Shinawatra to get rid of Eriksson but he might have someone lined up? Jose Mourinho anybody?

City kids are alright!

April 17, 2008

Manchester City’s youth team won the FA youth cup last night beating Chelsea 3-1 in front of 20,000 at the City Of Manchester Stadium. The team, mostly consisting of scallies drew in the first leg 1-1 at Stamford Bridge and it didn’t look good for them going 1-0 down within a couple of minutes.

The City kids came back with goals from skipper Ben Mee and winger Vladimir Weiss. Top scorer David Ball grabbed a third from the spot to seal the victory and the trophy for the first time since 1986 after losing two years ago to Liverpool.

The youth team in the last few years havs provide City with numerous players including Micah Richards, Nedum Onuoha, Michael Johnson, Stephen Ireland and the latest Daniel Sturridge who could have played a part in the final but missed out due to injury.

So the kids at City are alright and Sven should be looking forward to more young guns in the coming years!

Sunderland 1 - 2 Manchester City

April 13, 2008

A game that only came alight in the last ten minutes with all three goals. Kenwyne Jones had the best chance of the first half, a one on one forced a save out of City’s keeper Joe Hart.

Daniel Sturridge dived in the box, Elano put the ball away from the spot for an undeserved lead. Sunderland did come back into the game, Andy Reid’s cross being volleyed in by Dean Whitehead, a cracking goal.

But it wasn’t enough as with three minutes to goal sub Darius Vassell slotted in for a winner. A very unfair win for the away side considering in the dive from Sturridge.

Fulham, City and Wigan win.

March 16, 2008

Fulham gave themselves a lifeline today beating a tired Everton at Craven Cottage 1-0 to go within 2 points of Bolton. A second half header from Brian McBride was enough to separate the sides. Everton looked physically tired from their UEFA Cup exploits on Wednesday when they played 120 minites of footbal.

picture-14.jpgFulham still have much to do and will have to transfer the form at home way with 5 of their remaining games being away from Craven Cottage.

It the relegation battle Bolton visited the JJB to play Wigan. It was a terrible start for the home side who went down to ten men when Jason Koumas was sent off for a high tackle on Gary Cahill  after 5 minites. The sending off galvanized the home side and the took the lead in the first half thanks to Emilie Hesky. The big forward volleyed in Mario Melchiot’s long-throw.

In the second half Bolton pilled on the pressure with Erik Edman clearing off the line but the home side held on to take all three points and move 12th in the table

At the City of Manchester Stadium Spurs seemed to have had got over their midweek hangover due to going out of the UEFA Cup. Robbie Keane struck in the first half after a mistake from Vedran Corluka let Chimbomda in. To City’s credit they came back in the second half Stephen Ireland directed a shot in to equalize and Nedum Onuoha thumped in a header from a corner.

What could be worse than watching Man City V Wigan? Losing your chips!

March 4, 2008

Anyone who had the displeasure to watch Manchester City Vs Wigan on Sunday will have witnessed one of the worst games of the season. Luckily for me I only listened to the match on BBC Five Live, my heart goes out to poor old Alan Green and Jimmy Armfield had to sit there and talk about the game!

It seems that there is a three way divide in the Premier League now, teams scrapping for survival, teams in mid table meritocracy and those in the top 4 (maybe top 5 with the push of Everton). All this means that if you get two teams playing against each other who are mid table at this stage of the season it’s going to be a dire affair. In the case of Manchester City, they are in the mid table area and Wigan won’t attack for a win at Eastlands they would rather sit back and aim take an easy point.

Anyway,  as the second half was starting this little lad lost his chips, its down to inexperience of food consumption at football match, if your eating chips or any food from a tray you need to have your thumb on the top, stopping the tray flying away in the wind. He’ll gain that knowledge from experience.

P.S. note the commentator with a cracking lisp, Manccchesssster CCCity…..

winning is everything - quick round-up

February 8, 2008

Just some quick notes on the happenings of the day.

Benjani was surprised to be sold by Pompey to City in the transfer window. Pity he wasn’t so shocked that he couldn’t sleep otherwise the whole mess of this last week could have been avoided.

Manchester United pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson both won the monthly awards handed out for player and manager of the month respectively. Amazingly the last time that Fergie won was February last year.

Yakuba will miss out playing for Everton this weekend after arriving back late from the African Nations. Silly boy.

Micah Richards has signed a new five-and-a-half year deal at Eastlands although how much contracts are worth these days are anyones guess.

Adios for now.

Manchester remembers

February 6, 2008

Busby BabesToday is the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster which saw 23 people die, including 8 Manchester United players.

A memorial service was held at Old Trafford today, with another service held at the site of the crash in Munich earlier in the afternoon (around 13.30pm). A minutes silence will be held before the England game against Switzerland tonight and another held before the Manchester derby on Sunday afternoon.

A thousand people attended Old Trafford’s Manchester Suite for the memorial service, many more gathering outside on Sir Matt Busby Way. A minutes silence was held at 15.04pm to coincide with the time of the crash.

There has been some discussion on the best course of action for the derby, whether to have a minutes silence or clapping, in order to nullify anyone stupid enough to disrespect the occasion, but a minutes silence is planned, since this would be most representative and appropriate of the event. Leaflets have been sent out to remind those attending that Frank Swift, a former Manchester City player, also died in the crash as he was working as a journalist at the time.

These are precautionary measures but I’m sure that all those attended will show respect for those that perished. Special stripes will be worn by both teams, without sponsorship and numbered 1 through 11.

Benjani completes move north

February 5, 2008

BenjaniBenjani’s move from Portsmouth to Manchester City has been resolved.

Pompey will receive an initial fee of £3.87m, which according to some reports could rise to £7.6m (others £9m) if he makes 75 appearances for the club. He signs a two-and-a-half year deal with City after passing his medical on Monday.

The fee is much deflated from the ones from the rumor mill and “winning is everything” can’t help thinking that City have themselves some good business here.

Benjani Deal Close

February 5, 2008

After a right old balls up it looks like Manchester City will be able to sign Benjani from Portsmouth after it seems like the deal had not be completed before the transfer deadline. Premier League officials are set to confirm the deal on Tuesday.

Benjani

Manchester City claimed that they were in time with the paper work, but some elements hadn’t been sent in time. They weren’t helped by Benjani turning up late at the City Of Manchester Stadium for a medical and paperwork.

It will be pleasing news for Harry Redknapp and Pompy who had splashed out £7 Million on Jermaine Defoe on the presumption that they would be receiving £7.6 Million from Manchester City for Benjani.
