Pilgrims Plot League Return

February 28, 2008

Nationwide North side Boston United have described their talks with the Inland Revenue as “encouraging” as the battle to clear the debts which elicited a two league demotion at the end of last season continues.

The Pilgrims finished 23rd in the Football League last season following a final day defeat at Wrexham and Macclesfield earning a point against Notts County.

Boston then proceeded into administration straight after the final whistle in a bid to not incur a points deficit at the start of this season. Such shady tricks helped the Blue Square Premier to refuse them entry into their league and thus Boston now play two leagues below League Two in the Nationwide North.

Much has been documented of the dealings of former Manager Steve Evans as the club launch their long term plan to get back into the Football League, but with the legacy of former troubles still very much apparent and a team struggling in the league, the fight looks to be one which will not be over for some time.

Personally, I feel Boston deserve their fate in the lower leagues, however I really do feel for their fans who support their team through thick and thin with a blind devotion to their club – true football fans!

Manager of the Month Prizes Announced

February 28, 2008

Its the that time of the month again where those Managers whose sides have done well are awarded with a can of Stella and a kebab as a reward. Little do they know that the famous Manager of the Month curse is about to strike them and their side are sure to drop quicker than Jade Goody’s knickers!

In the Championship, Stoke’s Tony Pulis has been rewarded for guiding the Potters to top spot despite losing at lowly Preston last Tuesday night. No doubt they will have an eye on the Premiership and have not noticed that their fierce inter-city rivals Port Vale are banging on the door of the basement division.

League One sees Carlisle United’s John Ward pick up the monthly honour as his side claimed an automatic promotion place although still 12 points behind runaway leaders Swansea City. The Cumbrians won four out of their five matches in February as the former Cheltenham Town hero works his magic in a bid to secure Championship football next season.

Finally, the League Two accolade has been awarded to Lincoln City’s Peter Jackson who has seen his side launch a massive turnaround in February. Previously languishing at the foot of the table, Lincoln now enjoy a mid table position and even slight hopes of making it a staggering 5 play off seasons in a row if the run continues!

Silkmen axe Brightwell and move for Alexander

February 27, 2008

Macclesfield Town have moved quickly following their humiliating three nil home defeat to Peterborough United by sacking Manager Ian Brightwell.

The Moss Rose club currently are languishing in 22nd position in League Two, but have played significantly more games than their rivals and look best placed for the drop at the moment.

Feelings towards the former Manchester City defender have deteriorated rapidly over recent weeks – during which time Macc won just 2 out of 17 league games. Last Saturday saw Brightwell and Assistant Asa Harford take charge of the team for the final time – during which supporters in all home areas of the ground were calling for his head.

Macclesfield have been relegation fodder for many a season now, but Winning is Everything sees the quick appointment of Keith Alexander as being their saving grace – for one more season at least. The former Lincoln chief comes to the club, initially on a contract to last to the end of the season, but supporters of the Moss Rose outfit hope that he will bring some much needed stability which will elicit some degree of success.

It is thought that Brightwell was offered the number two position but rejected the offer in favour of a move away from Macclesfield.

Spurs celebrate Cup win by going on the lash

February 26, 2008

After the cup final win on Sunday the Spurs players were allowed a break from their strict diet set by Juande Ramos and proceeded to go on the lash in Essex. It appears that with some of the players not being on the booze for the deserved drink went to their heads and they ended up in a brawl. Ledley King was thrown out of Faces for being too drunk and then it all kicked off.

There are photos of the incident but a video is better with a rap track as the backing track

A twist in the road to Euro 2008

February 26, 2008

The overlord organisation Uefa has warned Spain they could be thrown out of this years European championships.

This could mean that Northern Ireland, who finished third in Spain’s group would be handed a place at the finals.

If the Spanish government tries to interfere in the election process of the Spanish FA then Uefa will put their foot down and all hell will break loose.

“Uefa and Fifa deal with these sort of issues very seriously. These are no empty threats - we will back them up,” said Uefa spokesman William Gaillard.

“It is similar to 1992 when Yugoslavia was suspended and Denmark, who finished second in the group, came in,” added Gaillard.

Eduardo to be back after 9 months

February 25, 2008

After initial thoughts that Eduardo would be out for more than a year after his horrible leg break the news following the operation is good with a predicted 9 months being the time out. The news today both online, on the radio and red tops has been about the injury but the news seems to be good with it predicted that the Croat could be back running in 6 months.

The other news is regarding Martin Talyor who was mentally tired in training this morning, support has come in from the footballing world including former Blackburn Rovers assistant manager Tony Parks. On the other side Croatian websites have been sighting death threats towards the former Rovers defender.

Slavan Bilic spoke on Radio 5 live tonigh, Bilic who is the manager of the national team in Croatia announced that he spoke to Eduardo and he was doing well in hospital and had no doubts that he would be back. He also couldn’t blame Martin Taylor for the injury and it was just one of those moments when it all went wrong.

As far as I’m concerned it was a clumsy tackle and we wish the lads all the best, Eduardo and Taylor.

Eduardo Leg Breaker

February 25, 2008

The pinnacle of the weekend was set to be the Carling Cup Final which Tottenham won 2-1 beating Chelsea for their first trophy in 9 years. But the talk in the offices this morning will be from the Arsenal V Birmingham match where Eduardo suffered one of the worst injuries in top flight football since David Busst terrible injury back in 1996.

The Croatian-Brazilian center forward suffered the injury early on in the game when Martin Taylor went in with a high tackle which at first glance appeared to a regular tackle, but from other angles (including the one below) shows why Eduardo suffered the double leg and ankle compound fracture.

Eduardo

Initial post match reaction from Arsène Wenger called for Taylor to receive life ban from the game. After cooling down Arsène Wenger retracting the statements. At the moment Taylor is set to miss the next three games while Eduardo is looking to b out for at least 18 months if not have to retire.

We send our best wishes to Eduardo but it does make make you think of the players who sufferer similar injuries on Sunday Mornings in Sunday League, Eduardo may have to face the possibility of retiring from the game but at least his financial future is secure where as the average Sunday league player may not be able to work for 18 months.

Lonely Leeds get our Support!

February 22, 2008

Leeds United have been left to fight their battle with the Football League alone after Barnsley rescinded their support.
The BBC has learnt that Tykes Chairman Gordon Shepherd has written to the League stating that he wanted no part of the legal battle following the deduction of 15 points from the Yorkshire outfit.
Mr Shepherd, who has been in and out of the club for some time due to illness is thought to have not fully understood the predicament which his club was in and immediately acted to repeal any support which may have previously been shown to Leeds United.
Leeds were docked 15 points for entering administration which is unquestionably harsh and one must ask whether if this had been any other club whether the sentence would have been so harsh!
Winning is Everything supports the Leeds United case and suggests that this is yet another example of the FA wielding the big stick whilst avoiding more pressing issues which are affecting the game.

The problem with agents

February 22, 2008

The Godfather of the Premiership Sir Alex Ferguson cannot for the life of him understand why agents have the powers that they do.

Frustrations are brewing as an agreement with Wes Brown over a contract extention is still no closer to fruition.

Brown’s deal runs out this summer, which means that not only can he talk to other clubs (legally) but he can also leave for a free on the Bosman ruling.

He may just be wanting to find out his market value, which is fair enough, but his agent Paul Martin has apparently advised him to hold out for more than £50,000 per week. Maybe I’m not in the loop but in my opinion at Manchester United (especially at right back) Gary Neville is king. Once he returns to full fitness he will once again reign supreme. So for a back-up/squad/rotation player (whichever you prefer) £50,000 a week seems a hell of a lot of money.

It seems Don Fergie agrees with me.

“Players of today live in their agents’ pockets - it’s a situation which really depresses me,” said Ferguson.

“We have given him his offer. It’s amazing really, given that he has had such a good season and has had such a good run of games while Gary has been injured.

“We wouldn’t have made the offer if we hadn’t had faith in him. Wes knows this and the other players have told him.”

Ferguson added: “Wes has been with us since he was 12 but I don’t think that matters these days. Their agents live their lives for them and if you are happy to go along with that then you get the situation that you have got just now.”

Quotes can be seen in their original form over on BBC Sport if you care to read them.
