Birmingham 1 - 1 Everton

April 12, 2008

Two sides with still plenty to play for, Birmingham looking to avoid the drop and Everton pushing for fourth spot in the league. A first half with little to talk about bar Joleon Lescott shooting into the side netting after the Birmingham defenders muddled on the ball. For the home side substitute Cameron Jerome hitting the post with looping header.

The game sparked into life in the second half Liam Ridgewell missed a sitter, a corner found the defender in the six yard box but he fired over, it seamed easier to score than miss. Tim Howard pulled off a double save from Jaidi and then McFadden as the home side pushed on.

After hitting the post in the first half Joleon Lescott grabbed his 9th goal of the season flicking the ball into the net for the opener.

But it was a Birmingham substitute to be the hero, Mauro Zarate scoring his fourth in as many games curling in a free kick into the top corner. Overall a good game and a fair result considering both sides had numerous chances.

Bolton 1 - 0 West Ham

April 12, 2008

1 point out of a possible 24 for the home side coming into the match, the Wanderer’s have been slowly wandering into the Championship, last season the Trotters were in fifth pushing for a Champions League spot at this stage of the season while West Ham were fighting for their lives.

Things didn’t start well for the away side when Ferdinand had to go off injured after a few minutes. Bolton came near to the opener Kevin Davies header being cleared off the line by Jonathan Spector. Davies had a second effort cleared off the line by Scott Parker, as Bolton pilled on the pressure from corners and throw-ins. Diouf thought he grabbed the first of the game when he tapped in a free kick but he was ruled offside, on second viewing an incorrect decision.

Bolton kept up the pressure from the first half and it didn’t take long into the second period to break the deadlock. Kevin Davies smashing in from a yard after Spector inpeded Green when he went to clear a the Bolton corner.

Dean Aston came the closest to grabber in a goal for West Ham, his overhead kick tipped onto the bar by Al Habsi. Kevin Nolan did have the ball in the net, that effort was disallowed correctly for offside.

The win moved Bolton onto 29 points two away from Birmingham.

Reading 0 - 2 Fulham

April 12, 2008

A first win away from home in the league for Fulham since September 2006. Reading are still not safe after this defeat and still need to pick up more points to be sure of a place in the Premiership. Fulham took the lead in the first half Brian McBride slotting in Davies cross. Doyle nearly grabbed a goal in the first half for the home side with a header which just went wide.

In the second half Brian McBride nearly grabbed a second and a goal of the season season with a cracking volley from the edge of the area which was tipped onto the bar by Hahnemann. Fulham hit the bar again with a Hangeland header’s again tipped on the bar by the impressive Hahnemann. Fulham then hit the bar for the third time when Bullards free kick bounced down off the bar.

It didn’t prove to be three times unlucky and the the second did eventually come late on when Nevland smashed in a crisp low shot past Hahemann for his first Fulham goal. At long last an away win for Fulham and there is a glimmer of hope for Roy Hodgson’s team.

Flip throw-in in the face

April 12, 2008

I remember when I was younger seeing at a World Cup a player doing a flip before a throw-in, the idea was the spring on the up of the flip would help the player throw the ball further, in this instant it threw the ball harder…..straight into a defenders face. Whammy.

Little to continue at Racecourse

April 11, 2008

Relegation bound League Two side Wrexham have been boosted by the news that manager Brian Little has signed a two year contract extension.

With just five matches remaining, the Red Dragons are seven points away from safety and were hammered at champions elect MK Dons last Tuesday evening.

Yet, Little has committed his future to the club despite their League status looking very precarious at the least.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Little stated –

“After the last few years, everybody deserves a team on the pitch that wins football matches and that’s exactly what I’ll be looking to try and do next season.”

The move has elicited a mixed response from the Wrexham fans, many of whom would prefer a clear break should they be relegated.

Winning is Everything believes that Brian Little is the right man to lead the Welsh club next season, no matter what league they are playing in. He is a very experienced manager and Wrexham fans should maybe judge him next season when he is essentially fielding his own team.

What do you think about Little’s extended stay at the Racecourse ? Leave us a comment!

Polls results - Should only captains speak to referees?

April 10, 2008

Another poll and it’s about a topic which a couple of weeks ago was very hot indeed. Should only captains speak to referees? After the Ashley Cole and then Javier Mascherano incidents many in the sports media were asking for a change in the rules from the grass roots to the top meaning that only captains should speak to the men in black.

The vote was close with Yes just winning 5 to 4.

poll results

I don’t think that anything will change in the way that players speak the referees, it’s up to the top players at the top level to change their attitude and set a example to all.

The next poll is about the winner of the Champions League? Four left now which one?

Hicks calls for Parry to go

April 10, 2008

The continuing saga of Hicks V Gillett has taken another turn with Tom Hicks asking Rick Parry Liverpool’s chief executive to go. Parry who has been at Anfield for ten years has now found himself in the middle of the spat between the two American owners just as interested buyers Dubai International Capital (DIC) have said they want no part in a take over until the two American’s sort their differences out.

This news came to light today after Tom Hicks sent a letter to Parry asking for his resignation following comments made by Parry on BBC’s Five Live Radio.

The BBC understands Parry is unlikely to resign and it would also take a majority vote from the board for Hicks to get Parry out of the club, and that boardroom at the moment isn’t behind Tom Hicks at all.

It’s all very strange timing for the club 24 hours after the Reds reached the semi finals of the Champions League beating Arsenal which will have put a few million on the price of the club. Interested buyers DIC have come out in a magazine saying they want no part to play in the club until the two partners start to see eye to eye.

It’s all a mess at the moment and there is still growing support for Share Liverpool FC a group of fans who have already have pledges of £60 million!

Three English teams into the semi-finals

April 10, 2008

It’s been a good couple of nights for the English teams in Europe with three teams going into the Champions League semi finals. Arsenal were the only losers 4-2 to Liverpool on the night going out 5-3 on aggregate. Chelsea turned around a first leg defeat against Fenerbahce winning 2-0 on the night to go through 3-2, Ballack and Lampard with the goals.

Many fans though that the performance wasn’t great but Avram Grant’s team have managed to make a 3rd semi final against Liverpool in 4 years.

Manchester Untied sealed their place last night with a 1-0 win over Roma to get a 3-0 overall win. United’s place in the next round was never in doubt and Roma even missed a penalty in the first half before Tevez stuck the only goal of the night.

In the four tie Barcelona beat Schalke 04 thanks to a goal from Toure Yaya, the Spaniard’s going into the next round thanks to a 2-0 aggregate score.

The semi final line up has already been arranged and Liverpool will meet Chelsea, the first leg at Anfield. Manchester United meet Barcelona playing at the Nou Camp in the first leg.

Alexander looks to further Silkmen role

April 9, 2008

Macclesfield Town manager Keith Alexander has stated that he is in negotiations to take control of the Cheshire club into next season.

The former Lincoln and Peterborough boss was brought in by the Silkmen following the sacking of previous boss Ian Brightwell in February. At that point, Macc were the solitary one point clear of the relegation zone with the two sides below them having games in hand.

The Silkmen have recently seen a upturn in fortunes however and are now lying in a fairly comfortable 18th position, with last Saturday’s one all draw at Wrexham almost ensuring their league survival for another year.

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Alexander stated –

“We’re not safe yet - I’m hoping the fans will get down to the Moss on Saturday, get behind the team and who knows if we get three points we might be safe with a couple of games to go”

Macclesfield are the perennial strugglers within League Two and it is hoped that then man who guided Lincoln to four consecutive play off positions will have the same effect at Moss Rose.

All the signs look promising at this stage – good luck Keith!
