Fergie set for a clean sweep?

February 28, 2009

Surely it cannot happen – can it? One team winning all four major trophies in the same season? Manchester United go in to this afternoon’s Carling Cup final with Spurs knowing that a victory will set them on their way to be the most successful side in English football ever.

Although Fergie is set to rest Rooney, Vidic, Carrick and Van der Saar, the team expected to start the final is a competitive one and also an attacking one. Surprisingly, midfielder Paul Scholes has never experienced a victorious League Cup winning team and he will be going out all guns blazing to rectify this.

The league, if we are honest is wrapped up already – the most competitive competition which United are still involved in is surely the Champions League. I would say that they are favourites to beat Inter in the return leg of their last sixteen match and there are not many teams who will want a trip to the North West in the Quarter Finals.

Personally, the only team which I can see beating United is Barcelona, but even they have gone off the boil in recent weeks.

It would be a brilliant achievement if the Reds achieved a clean sweep of trophies – it will probably never happen again in our lifetimes so I for one am behind Fergie and his team.

The title race is surely over now!

February 28, 2009

The title race is now surely over. L:iverpool’s two nil defeat at Middlesborough has surely put the nail in their Championship ambitions and with Manchester United seemingly running away with the league, is it now time to say that they deserve it.

Liverpool looked to be the main threat to United’s crown a few weeks back but a series of poor results have made everyone think what is going on at Anfield. Teams who win the league do not draw so many matches against weak opposition, and Liverpool have done this time and time again. Benitez is a great big game Manager, but he looks to be hopelessly inept when it comes to facing teams like Fulham, West Ham and Manchester City.

Chelsea are also out of the race in my opinion and are paying for the appointment of Big Phil. In the summer he looked a great acquisition but things did not go his way and he paid the ultimate price for it. Anything other than a clean sweep of trophies is a failure at the Bridge, and therefore Phil’s departure was pretty obvious to predict.

Arsenal this season are awful, lets face it. Wenger must feel that his job is in the balance come the summer after a range of poor results sees the Gunners struggling to even make a Champions League place.

So there you have it – well done United although nobody really challenged you this season did they?

United looking good to progress

February 25, 2009

This was the first leg of one of the most important games of the season for both teams.  Manchester United took the game to Inter from the off and dominated the first half with a number of free kicks on the edge of Inter’s 18 yard box.

Manchester United continued to push forward to try and break the deadlock, but as the first half came to an end, Man of the Match Julio Cesar stood tall in the Inter goal.  The man was truly in the form of his life!

The second half saw Inter come out and try to play Manchester United at their own game, forcing the tie into a more open affair, but still no one was able to score.  With Mourinho making three substitutions and Ferguson making one, neither manager could out wit the other to try and break the deadlock.  It was like watching a game of chess unfold before your eyes.

Inter were still pushing for the goal, and came close to it in the closing minutes, when they were awarded a corner, but couldnt put the ball past van der Sar.  The final whistle came after another free kick to Manchester United, which again, they were unable to capitalise on.  At the end of the first leg, Manchester United will look back on the missed chances, and Inter will be thankful or the match saving heroics of Julio Cesar.

United must hold the upper hand now and it would take a brave man to bet against them progressing through to the quarter finals.

Can it ever be right to boycott your team?

February 24, 2009

There are literally millions of football fans around the world all of which take a keen interest in their team. Many people go and which their team every week and brave the elements in order to do so. But what happens if the team is not winning trophies – or even winning matches?

At any level of football, a winning team is going to generate larger gates than a losing one. This is common sense – people don’t go to watch a game of football if they are pretty sure that there team will lose.

The question is however whether or not there is a fine line between fan loyalty and lying down and letting your club take the mickey out of you. I am going to boycott my club this week as not only is the style of football absolute garbage, the results are even worse. But more than that, nobody at the club seems to give a damn in terms of investment in the team or the club in general.

Is this right? Does this make me a lesser supporter than someone who blindly accepts whatever the club say to them? It’s a difficult one to answer but in my mind, staying away from your club in certain situations can be because you love them so much you have to do it.

What do you think?

Plan for Valentines Day early folks!

February 10, 2009

As many of you will be aware, next Saturday is Valentine’s Day and this could cause you a certain amount of trouble, particularly if your team is playing away from home. Wives and girlfriends will be wanting you to spend the day with them when really all you want to do is go out, have a few beers with the lads and watch your team.

There are a number of different ways in which you could create a situation which is beneficial for everyone and WIE has some ideas which may help you out. The first one is maybe the simplest and that is to take your partner to the match with you. Invite them for a “day out” with you which may well involve a meal after the match where the two of you can spend some time alone.

Another idea is to bring up the issue early and suggest that you do something together on the Friday night instead. Again a trip to the cinema or meal out may well suffice.

If Friday does not suit then what about Sunday lunch out together instead – take her for a slap up meal and treat her like a princess for the day.

Alternatively of course you could just say you forgot about it and have made other plans – but we certainly would not recommend this!

Good luck!

Richards Arrested!

February 5, 2009

Manchester City star Micah Richards has been arrested and released on bail after a man was assaulted in Hale. The incident occurred outside a nightclub on Christmas Eve.

Richards has been questioned by Greater Manchester Police and was later bailed.

City Manager Mark Hughes is said to be aware of the situation and has given Richards his full support. Questions surrounding whether or not the defender will be in the squad for the home game with Middlesborough seem to have been answered by Hughes who has stated that Richards is “in the right frame of mind” for the game.

The news has not come at the best of times for City after an event packed couple of weeks which saw them miss out on the signing of Brazilian playmaker Kaka, followed by the disappearance of Robinho and subsequent allegations which have been made against him. It certainly is not a good time to be at the City of Manchester Stadium and if I played for them I would just try to get my head down and concentrate on my game.

The next few months will be a chance for the current City team to try and prove themselves as in the summer there will be an immense amount of transfer activity – you can be assured of that!
