Defoe deal becomes permanent

February 5, 2008

Jermain Defoe has made his loan move to Portsmouth permanent.

The striker made a great start to his Pompey career by scoring against Chelsea at the weekend. Now 25, he signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Fratton Park, just days after agreeing to go on loan at the club.

Redknapp added:

“I honestly could not tell you the exact details but, at five minutes to midnight on Thursday, the two deals were dependent on each other with us getting £9m for Benjani and spending it on Defoe.

“I didn’t want to lose him but, of course, I had to because it is good business to sell a 29-year-old and get in a lad of 25 who is always going to get you goals.”

This would suggest that the Benjani deal does indeed increase to £9m after the 75-appearances clause rather than just over £7m as some reports have suggested.

Is he worth it you think? The split-payment for Benjani seems very suspect to me. What are the odds that he only plays 74 games?

I have heard rumors that the deal with Benjani is that after 25 games it’s £1m to Pompey, after 50 a further £2m and then £3m after 75. This seems as though Pompey are protecting themselves from City doing something like you suggest. In all probability he will play those games, should he not become injury prone. He has signed a two-and-a-half year deal, so even if City do not make Europe he should play 75 games.

For example take Milner at Newcastle last year, he played something like 56 games. Even if Benjani only played in the league (no cups or Europe), he would still make the total of 75.

Personally though I think Pompey have the better business.

Got something to say?
