Euro 2009 Preview – Russia
May 30, 2008
The majority of Guus Hiddink’s squad is based in Russia, many from UEFA cup winners Zenit St Petersburg. There has been a blow the squad with striker Pavel Pogrebnyak of Zenit picking up an injury in the friendly match with Serbia. The knee injury make the striker a doubt, he scored 10 goals in Zenit’s UEFA cup campaign.
At 25/1 they are outsiders, in Group D with Sweden, Spain and Greece they do have a good chance of getting through the group stages behind Spain.
It’s wouldn’t be surprising if they did with the recent upturn in the domestic league in Russia thanks to large investments.
