June 8, 2008

Euro 2008 kicked off yesterday with wins the Czech Republic and Portugal. The Czech’s had to weather a storm against hosts Switzerland, Petr Cech saved a couple of efforts in the first half from the Swiss captain Alexander Frei.

The Czech’s took the lead in the second half after 70 minutes when Sverkos slotted the ball home after a ball over the top of the Swiss defence. It looked like the Swiss were going to grab an equaliser when Johan Vonlanthen’s volleyed onto the underside of the bar.

Meanwhile in the same group Portugal beat Turkey 2-0. All eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo, he nearly grabbed the opening goal when he smacked free kick onto the post, Turkish keeper Volkan Demirel tipping the ball onto the post.

It was the centre back Pepe who opened the scoring after 61 minutes. He played a one-two with Nuno Gomes and dinked the ball over Demirel. The second came in injury time, Deco setting up sub Raul Meireles to tap in at the far post.

The tournament continues with today with Austria v Croatia and Germany v Poland
