Simpson set for Shrewsbury role

March 12, 2008

Winning is Everything understands that former Carlisle and Preston Manager Paul Simpson is set to take the reigns at League Two side Shrewsbury Town.

Simpson was present at the Shrews goalless draw with Darlington at the New Meadow last night and is set to be unveiled before the clash with Macclesfield Town this Saturday.

Shrewsbury had moved to capture Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy but the Irishman opted to stay at Christie Park, clearing the way for the arrival of Simpson.

The League Two side have acted quickly following the departure of Gary Peters by mutual consent last week and are eager to halt a baron run which has seen them plummet to 15th position.

Formerly a midfielder with Manchester City, Derby, Oxford and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Simpson led Preston to the summit of the Championship in 2006, before a disastrous run saw him being sacked by the Deepdale club last November.
